Muslims were seen today running to the public worship centre to pray. The prayers started exactly 9. A.M. It last just twenty minutes. Most Muslims did not meet the prayers. And a number of them were not patient to listen to the sermon. And all of them, with brisk foot left the worship centre.
Observed on the tenth day of the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar, Eld-el-Kabir is the time to slaughter the ram as recorded in the Quran when Allah instructed Abraham to sacrifice his only son, Ishmael but later provided a ram instead because of the faith demonstrated by Abraham.
Eid-el-Kabir, in these contemporary times, is no longer observed to make sacrifice per se but to enforce a life of purity on the faithful who are expected to converge at the designated place of Eid prayers fasting to join with others in the public worship centre.
A faithful Muslim would lose nothing if he was unable to attend the public worship or to acquire a ram for himself but must participate in Eld-el-Kabir according to his ability to enjoy the fellowship of sharing.
Abubakar Mohammed said the period has spurred him to greater commitment to Prophet Mohammed injunction.
Others who expressed thanks to Allah for life to see another Eld-el-Kabir noted that the lesson of the festival centre on faith, purity, peaceful co-existence and love as commended b Almighty Allah.
